Chapter I

Born from a love of stories

Two friends. One wild idea.
Hundreds of books.

Second Helping Books began when a cozy bookstore game sparked a very real question: what if we brought a bookstore to life?

We’re Sarah O’Hara and Gina Giles-Hare—lifelong readers, friends, and the women behind the shelves. What started as a bright spot in a hard season became a shared adventure: gathering donated books and bringing them to breweries, fairs, markets, and community spaces around Frederick.

We believe finding a book should feel personal, joyful, and just a little bit magical. We’ll happily talk favorite characters, impossible-to-put-down endings, and the titles that kept us reading until 2 a.m.

Our mission

To give good books another chapter, create welcoming spaces for readers, and make every pop-up count for the community we call home.

At every event, we partner with a different charity and share a portion of what we raise. Each pre-loved book carries its story forward—and helps write a better one for someone else.
